Shop Porter Flea Holiday & Give the Gift of Local.

n December 6th and 7th, knock out your Holiday gift list while enjoying the company of local artisans and their one-of-a-kind products! Since this past summer, I have anxiously awaited to feature

Porter Flea

, Nashville’s, "Modern Handmade Market" that happens only twice a year!

Recently, I spoke with founders Katie Vance and Jessica Maloan about Porter Flea was born. In the process of planning the first flea, Vance and Maloan recruited Brent Elrod, financial guru of the team and employee of Porter East, the location of the first show. "We all chipped in and brought our own talents to the table," Vance says.

Both Katie and Jessica are crafters themselves and designed the market based off their own experiences. "We met so many people who traveled the artisan show circuit and it made sense to bring an event to Nashville where they could stop in between Chicago and Atlanta," says Maloan, who started out designing relief prints. "I originally went to school for graphic design but wanted to do more hands-on work," she says. Vance sold her own knit art and jewelry in college and currently works as an interior designer.

Since the first show in July 2011, Porter Flea has grown from 35 to 85 artisans. "Our show is especially vendor-focused," says Katie. "We think about their needs and don't have a lot of other activities going on that take away from the artists." Through Porter Flea, artists and crafters have found wholesale opportunities as well as the motivation to continue their business. “Our mission is to support the handmade movement in Nashville,” says Maloan.

When choosing vendors, the Porter Flea team considers a product's originality, branding, cohesion, and seasonality. Although it is a tough process for the jury, Vance believes " it is important we evolve into a rotating troop of artists." Among the vendors who have been with Porter Flea since the beginning include

Boss Construction

, Emily Marlow from

400 Moons

, and Jamie Bennett of

This Holiday Market

For those who want a slower paced shopping experience, Porter is hosting a VIP Preview Market on Friday, December 6th, 6pm-9pm. DJ sets by

"We work really hard but most of our success comes from the supportive community. If we did everything right where amazing people lined up but nobody came, we wouldn't keep doing this. " ~ Jessica Maloan
